Joseph Peterson spoke at Leaping Laughter Lodge in Minneapolis, MN in July 2018 to an appreciative audience of about 20 people. It was seriously fun.

Joseph discusses putting together a witch's handbook from the trial records of the Venetian Inquisition.

This grimoire, or handbook of magic, was confiscated by the Venetian Inquisition in 1636 from practicing witches. After decades of searching for this elusive text, Joseph now has the pleasure of presenting and translating it here for the first time. It contains their secret techniques for dealing with the more dangerous spirits or daemons, intentionally scattered and hidden within a collection of “secrets” comprising many detailed examples. Together these provide enough clues to enable practitioners to create their own spells for working with all the spirits cataloged.

Host Harper Feist speaks to Rain Al-Alim, which is the nom de plume of the author of Jinn Sorcery.  He has chosen to remain anonymous to avoid the stigmatization that practitioners of magic and sorcery can experience in his country - and the punishment can include beheading in some countries. He holds a degree in journalism and is currently studying Arabic philology; and he has studied and practiced the occult arts for approximately 17 years.

Thelema Now's Harper Feist and author Peter Mark Adams discuss Sola-Busca tarot and Peter's book The Game of Saturn.

The Game of Saturn is the first full length, scholarly study of the enigmatic Renaissance masterwork known as the Sola-Busca tarot. It reveals the existence of a pagan liturgical and ritual tradition active amongst members of the Renaissance elite and encoded within the deck. Beneath its beautifully decorated surface, its imagery ranges from the obscure to the grotesque; we encounter scenes of homoeroticism, wounding, immolation and decapitation redolent of hidden meanings, violent transformations and obscure rites. Fascinating stuff!

Thelema Now welcomes composer David Hertzberg!   At the end of the interview, please listen to Mr. Hertzberg's original composition Meditation Boreale

Composer in Residence David Hertzberg and director R.B. Schlather take visitors on a fantastic journey through the treasured galleries of Philadelphia's The Barnes Foundation. This performance will run at the Barnes from September 18th - 25th.

In this performance, two of the early 20th century’s most prolific and polarizing artistic visionaries collide: physician, collector, and writer Dr. Albert C. Barnes (1872-1951) and Aleister Crowley (1875-1947).

In a one-act opera inspired by Crowley’s "The Wake World," visitors will experience Dr. Barnes’s collection like never before as they follow a wide-eyed seeker and her guardian angel on a dreamlike voyage. Works of art jump off the gallery walls and into the action as the museum is transformed, with the voices of the Opera Philadelphia Chorus drawing the audience through a mystical world of hallucinatory vividness.

Dr. David Shoemaker returns to Thelema Now to discuss his latest work, Karl Germer Selected Letters 1928-1962.

Karl Germer (1885-1962) was Aleister Crowley’s successor as head of the magical order A.’.A.’. and Outer Head of Ordo Templi Orientis. His legacy, however, is mostly known through the work of his students and confidantes. Little has been published about the life, teachings, and spiritual experiences of this most dedicated Thelemite. In an effort to shed some light upon Germer's life’s work, the Temple of the Silver Star now makes available this selection from a lifetime of correspondence.

Drawing on decades of experience, author and historian Peter Levenda turns to the novel as the best and perhaps only way to tell a story that has to be told – that hidden within the tales of America's most iconic writer of gothic horror, H.P. Lovecraft, runs a vein of actual terror.

Gregory Angell, the present-day descendant of George Angell in Lovecraft's “Call of Cthulhu,” is summoned by a nameless covert agency of the US government to retrieve a sacred book from the grasp of an Islamist terror network operating out of northern Iraq, in the land of the Yezidi. Peter explains where all this comes from and how he had to continually update the book in light of current events.

Thelema Now! Guest: Matthew Marble (24 minutes)

Thelema Now's Frater Puck talks to Princeton University grad Matthew Marble about his dissertation Buddhist Bubblegum: Esoteric Buddhism in the Creative Process of Arthur Russell.  (You can read the full dissertation here.

For the uninitiated, the late Arthur Russell was an American cellist, composer, producer, singer, and musician whose work spanned a disparate range of styles. Trained in contemporary experimental composition and Indian classical music, Russell found success in downtown New York's avant-garde and disco scenes in the 1970s and 1980s.

A prolific recording artist, Russell produced a considerable collection of material over the course of his career, including a number of successful underground dance hits under various aliases, but his near-chronic inability to complete projects resulted in a limited amount of released output; World of Echo (1986) would be his only full-length solo album to see release during his lifetime. Russell also collaborated with a wide variety of artists, including composers Steve Reich and Philip Glass, poet Allen Ginsberg, musicians such as Peter Zummo and David Byrne, and DJs such as Walter Gibbons and Nicky Siano. He died from AIDS in 1992, still in relative obscurity and nearly broke.

His music lives on - so check it out!

Thelema NOW! Guest: Steve Vinson

Professor Steve Vinson discusses the odd friendship between gruff but loveable Aleister Crowley and Egyptologist Battiscombe Gunn. Ancient Egypt was one area in which modern scholarship and esotericism overlapped, and even converged. It is not often remembered today that in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a number of mainstream scholars of antiquity were interested in esoteric or occult subjects. One very interesting case is that of Battiscombe Gunn (1883-1950), still remembered as one of the most insightful Egyptologists of his generation. What is less well known is that Gunn was associated, apparently in more than a casual way, with Aleister Crowley. Find out more!
